#SiMH – The Planet Smashers

Remember ska? Of course you do. You heard it in the playlist on Friday. In the course of making that list, I found myself loving those tracks. A lot. So much, I’ve had The Planet Smashers’ “Surfin’ in Tofino” stuck in my head (#SiMH.) Ironic, since that track didn’t make the playlist.

But that got me thinking. Have I ever even heard another Planet Smashers track? I couldn’t think of one. That drove me to Spotify where I listened to the whole of Life of the Party, the album from which “Tofino” originates.

What I found was a guaranteed dance party. Is there another genre of music more assured to get you tapping your toes, chair dancing, or even up on your feet, busting a move? If there is, please tell me about it.

Between the brass and the organ, The Planet Smashers never sound like they’re taking themselves too seriously. Some of their tracks even sound like they ought to be an Arrogant Worms-like joke (“Super Orgy Porno Party?”) Yet they never comes off that way. They are always upbeat and completely danceable, with perhaps the exception of “No Matter What You Say,” which mellows things out nicely for a break after nearly a dozen tracks of head-bobbing beats. It’s also the longest track on the album, topping in a just over four minutes. With the exception of two others, nothing else tops the three-minute mark, making the 15-track album just fly by.

Things then get more ominous after “No Matter” as a musical fight breaks out on Kung Fu Master, but things settled down to that same toe-tapping sound I was accustomed to for the final two tracks.

I could see why ska isn’t exactly a favoured sound for some people: the beats could be considered irritating to some and it may just sound like a joke to others. I find that almost frivolous aspect of the attitude refreshing, especially with all the turmoil we’re living with these days. Life of the Party helped me to disconnect and enjoy just being for a while.

  6. Good morning, R3 remnants! Summer camping trip in the famed Shaggin’ Wagon is over. Had another great time with my best friend of 45 years! And the Shaggin’ Wagon is 18 miles away from “rolling them over” to “00000”!

    What’s been happening here?

  7. TooL, no, not at all. They’ve got you convinced they’re the innocent party, but they’re such liars and dissemblers. Fron the Wiki:

“(…) These birds will frequently use a distraction display (“broken-wing act”) to distract predators from their nests. This involves the bird walking away from its nesting area holding its wing in a position that simulates an injury and then flapping around on the ground emitting a distress call. The predators then think they have easy prey and are attracted to this seemingly injured bird and away from the nest. If the parent sees that a potential predator is not following them, they will move closer and get louder until they get the attention of the predator. This is repeated until the predator is far from the nest, and the killdeer suddenly “heals” and flies away.[15][17]”

See? not even decent prey. Tricksters! Deer killers!

The shorts can (with the massive caveat that they probably cannot ) raise the angle of your erection, improve your sex drive and sexual stamina, and, eventually, allow you to have multiple orgasms. The shorts are also an allegory for modern existence, and they are being crowdfunded.”

  9. @zammyLungs I didn’t get a chance to return to the blog to comment on Friday, Laurita had some awesome suggestions as last comment for songs of summer. I second (or perhaps fourth) Lodestar by Sarah Harmer. Oh that song!
The Littlest gets obsessed with songs & so for the past few years she has been the one who dictates it. It’s not always one I’m happy to hear a gajillion times but this year it’s Paris by Scenic Route to Alaska. I think @reg would approve:)

And I checked the odometer of the famed Shaggin’ Wagon this morning and it reads 99987, so it’s 13 miles from rolling them over. And the 38 year old motor home ran flawlessly! But I came home to Peggy telling me that the air conditioning in the house went out. Bummer.

PS. to whom it may concern: I am listening to The Avalanches. They are cool. I love any kind of mashup pop/electronica stuff (Girl Talk, Public Service Broadcasting, and..wait for it…The Books). I think it must be challenging to create that stuff, but I’m glad people do.

  31. Old Abe – The Shaggin’ Wagon’s longevity is no doubt helped by my annual maintenance, and the fact that it doesn’t get used all that much. Plus, I have it under a fabric cover when at the storage lot, and if anything, that’s helped the “RV” part of it from leaks, blazing sunshine, rain, everything else. But it has only gone into the shop twice in the last 20 years, once for a carburetor rebuild and once for a/c rebuild. If you should ever own a trailer or motor home, you’d better be a handyman/handywoman!

  49. “ATTENTION EVERYONE: We would just like to clear the air over some recent online discussion concerning our song, “Banjo Odyssey”. There have been a number of people concerned that the song is about rape, and that the song condones non-consensual sex. We would like to take a moment to explain the song to anyone who has been hurt or offended.

The song is written as a narrative. It is a story about two cousins who engage in a relationship, and are trying to escape their family, who is not O.K. with the relationship. The lyrics were meant as a satirical, tongue-in-cheek reference to our own genre; playing on the inbred-hillbilly stereotype often brought to mind when one thinks of bluegrass music.

We sincerely apologize to anyone who has been hurt or offended by these lyrics, as the last thing we would want to do is offend anyone. We make music because we love to, and as anyone who has seen our live show knows, we try not to take ourselves too seriously; we like to laugh, dance, and have fun and the song was written in jest.

Obviously, we do not condone rape or violence, and “Banjo Odyssey” (like many of our songs) is written as a story, and not as something to be taken literally.

There are other ways but I think this will work. There are four bucky pins. So… RULES, 1) email me with “bucky contest” in the subject line. If you don’t your email may not get through. 2) Since the pins are from around 2005 let me know in the body your favorite (hopefully Canadian band) in 2005. I will be awarding points that are made up and don’t matter. You could also put your mailing address to make it easy for when you win, but I can always contact you. 3) Live in Canada; or be willing to pay extra shipping to wherever you live. Sorry, I am not a rich man. 4) Email me by the end of July 31st. 5) Please don’t send me more than one email. You will be penalized. One entry per person and you can’t win more than one. Let everyone get a chance 😀

    5) I am doing this on the fly.. rules may change and all that other lawyer stuff.

Click the link to enter! Or just email me. ❤ good luck
